Talking points for Letters To the Editor

Remember, letters that are original and concise have the best chance of being printed. Check your specific paper's web site for word limits - usually word limits range from 150-250 words.

- Late Thursday night, 73 U.S. Senators from both sides of the aisle voted to restore cuts to the small amount of money our nation devotes toward international assistance.

--- Sen. Q deserves praise for being one of them. OR
--- Sen. Q should have been one of them.
--- Currently, less than one-half of 1 percent of the federal budget goes to programs that will help lift people out of the cruel cycle of hunger and poverty.

- Perhaps include an example of poverty-focused development assistance (life-saving medicines, agricultural development, access to clean water, etc).

- Use a moving statistic on hunger or poverty from the Bread Web site, or some other story that puts a face on global poverty (such as, one billion people in the world live on less than $1 a day).

- If there is an issue that may be particularly compelling to your Senator, use that example (for instance, we know that .

--- The needs are greater than ever: skyrocketing food prices globally are already taking a toll on people who struggle to feed their families on $1 a day.

--- A strong International Affairs Budget is the first step toward ensuring funds for programs that fight global hunger and poverty.

--- Sen. Q should continue her/his support for more and smarter investments in a better world.

If the senator voted nay:

- Cutting the smallest sliver of the federal budget pie that helps hungry and poor people is not right and does not reflect the values of this great nation.

- If your senator's "nay" vote is inconsistent with their previous stances on foreign assistance, bring that up.

- If there is an issue that may be particularly compelling to your senator, use that as an example.
